Nonhomogeneity of the density of states of tunneling two-level systems at low energies

چکیده
Amorphous solids, and many disordered lattices, exhibit a remarkable qualitative and quantitative universality in their acoustic properties at temperature 3 K. This phenomenon is attributed to the existence of tunneling two-level systems (TTLSs), characterized by a homogeneous density of states (DOS) at energies much lower than the disorder energy (≈0.1 eV). Here we calculate numerically, from first principles, the DOS of KBr:CN glass, the archetypal disordered lattice showing universality. In contrast to the standard tunneling model, we find that the DOS diminishes abruptly at ≈3 K, and that tunneling states differ essentially by their symmetry under inversion. This structure of the TTLSs dictates the low temperature below which universality is observed, and the quantitative universality of the acoustic properties in glasses. Consequences to the properties of glasses at intermediate temperatures, as well as to the microscopic structure of amorphous solids, are discussed.

In this paper, the density of states (DOS) of a planar d-wave Josephson junction is studied analytically. Two high temperature superconductors are separated by an interface with finite transparency coefficient. The c-axes are parallel to the interface and ab-axes have a mis-orientation. The tunneling occurs via the interface because of phase difference between superconducting bulks. The effec...

The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of 5-nitro-1H-benzo[d] imidazole to produce 6-nitro-1H-benzo[d] imidazole was studied by employing hybrid meta-density functional theory. MPWBlK/6-31+G** level calculations were carried out to obtain energies and optimize the geometries of all stationary points along the PES, and determine the harmonic vibrational frequencies. Two transition states (TS...
متن کاملA THEORY OF VACUUM TUNNELING MICROSCOPY1
A theory for tunneling between a real surface and a model probe tip, applicable to the "scanning tunneling microscope" is presented. The tunneling current is found to be proportional to the local density of states of the surface, at the position of the tip. It can be shown that the tunneling conductance has exponential dependence on the distance of the nearest approach to the surface

We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the one-particle density of states DOS d ,T of low-dimensional disordered metals near Fermi energy within the framework of the finite temperature conventional impurity diagram technique. We consider only diffusive limit and, by a geometric resummation of the most singular first-order self-energy corrections via the Dyson equation, we obtai...
متن کاملTunneling density of states, pair correlation, and Josephson current in spin-incoherent Luttinger-liquid/superconductor hybrid systems
We study a hybrid system consisting of a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid adjoined at one or both ends to a superconductor. We find that the tunneling density of states diverges at low energies and exhibits a universal frequency dependence independent of the strength of the interactions in the system. We show that in spite of exponentially decaying pair correlations with distance into the spin-...
